Imagine Raymond is de splinternieuwe naam van WOFO, het ensemble van en rond FES-saxofonist Michel Mast. Voor deze band lieten ze zich extra bemannen door multiinstrumentalist,pianist en elektronica wizard Dijf Sanders. Samen nemen ze een duik in het bijzondere repertoire van de Amerikaanse componist en elektronica pionier Raymond Scott, bij het brede publiek bekend voor zijn muziek die werd gebruikt bij populaire cartoonfilms.

Met Imagine Raymond worden de diverse aspecten uit zijn oeuvre belicht: de akoestische “jazzcomposities” komen rijkelijk aan bod maar altijd met een vette elektronische knipoog. Het repertoire wordt aangevuld met originele composities van Xavier Verhelst, Dijf Sanders zorgt voor ongehoorde elektronische interpretaties en klanktapijten.

Adventurous hybrid jazz at its best. I struggle to describe why this stands out above a crowd, but... It all sounds so precise. Every instrument fills its own space so that, as busy as it gets, it never feels crowded. It breathes easy while full of energy. In case I'm not making sense, this, in short, is brilliant. Added bonus that the vocal track doesn't stand out negatively as those too often do on otherwise instrumental albums. Heavy rotation, and the best jazz-related album of 2022. rvss.eel
